Why get your boiler serviced?

• Safety. A service checks that your boiler is burning gas correctly and that waste gases are being carried safely out of your home.
• Fewer breakdowns. Worn parts and small faults are easier and cheaper to deal with before they stop the boiler altogether.
• Efficiency. A boiler that’s set up correctly uses gas more efficiently.
• Your warranty. Many manufacturers require a yearly service by a Gas Safe registered engineer to keep the warranty valid.

What a boiler service involves

Every boiler is serviced following its manufacturer’s instructions. A typical service includes:

• A visual check of the boiler, its pipework and the flue, inside and outside the property
• Checking the boiler fires up, runs and shuts down properly
• Checking the flue gases with an analyser to confirm the boiler is burning safely and efficiently
• Inspecting, and where needed cleaning, the key components
• Checking the safety devices and controls work as they should
• Checking the system pressure
• Recording the service in your boiler’s service record and telling you about anything we’ve found

Getting ready for your service

• Make sure we can get to the boiler easily, and clear any cupboard around it
• Have the boiler manual and service record to hand, if you have them
• Make a note of anything you’ve noticed, such as noises, pressure drops or fault codes

Landlords: by law you need a gas safety check on every gas appliance in a rented property every year, with a record given to your tenants. A boiler service and a gas safety check are not the same thing.
